Angeblich war es der von Keyboarder Billy Preston gerne getätigte Ausspruch «If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with» der Stephen Stills zum Text seines Klassikers “Love the one you’re with” angeregt hat.
Erschienen ist das Lied auf Stills’ erstem Soloalbum im Jahre 1970, im gleichen Jahr erfolgte auch eine Singleauskoppelung.
