Irland war lange Zeit, besonders Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, ein Auswanderungsland und die Emigranten haben ihre Musik mitgenommen und so wird heute fast überall auf der Welt Irish Folk gesungen, gespielt und gehört.
Viele der viele Lieder beziehen sich auf das irische Freiheits- und Unabhängigkeitsstreben von England, die große Hungersnot von 1840, bekannt und beliebt sind auch die Kampflieder der IRA.
