We broadcast a recording of the interview with Vera Bühlmann and Angeliki Giannisi. The conversation took place in the frame of the course Emerging Fields in Architecture, TU Vienna (WS 2024/25). Students were investigating current and future challenges in planning and building within a broader social, ecological and technological context. For this series, they asked researchers, creative people and experts from different disciplines and research fields about the following questions: What kind of future do we want to create? What role(s) does architecture play in this? What visions exist, and where are they leading us? What can we learn from other disciplines for a sustainable architecture? What lessons can be drawn from the past for future projects? How would you define, from your disciplines perspectives, the relationship between language and architecture? How does the vocabulary we use influence how we think about and design spaces?

The interview with Vera Bühlmann and Angeliki Giannisi explored how language and architecture influence the perception, design, and meaning of spaces. Vera Bühlmann, a professor of architectural theory at TU Wien and director of the department of architectural theory and philosophy of technology ATTP, and Angeliki Giannisi, an architect working with an studio called “Local Local”, discussed how vocabulary and narratives affect architectural design and our emotions within the spaces we inhabit. The discussion addressed language as a conceptual tool, examining terms like “sustainability” or “luminosity” and their impact on architectural design. The guests debated the challenges of translating complex architectural ideas into everyday language and how this interaction can promote more inclusive spaces. Finally, Vera and Angeliki shared inspiring reflections on how to explore this intersection.

Laura Rodriguez and Paula Herrero conducted the interview and produced this broadcast as part of the course Mediated Architecture at the TU Wien.

Architects play a crucial role in shaping our future. They bring about technological, social, and spatial advances through their ideas and conceptions that can profoundly affect how we cohabit.

How we will live in the future is a complex question that engages researchers, creatives, and experts from various disciplines. As part of the “Emerging Fields in Architecture” module at TU Wien, Hochbau 2, numerous experts were interviewed on this topic during the winter semester of 2023/2024. Multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches were discussed. Multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary strategies were developed to address current and future design challenges in the context of social change. Architecture has a crucial role to play in addressing global challenges such as climate change and demographic change. Therefore, it is essential that architects have a broad understanding of sustainability, technology, and social issues and incorporate them into their designs. By pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, architects can contribute to shaping a sustainable and future-proof world in which we can all live.
