On September 3 Club9 welcomed Matthias Lingenfelder, violinist and artistic director, and Astrid Braunsperger, violinist and director of the Mondsee Musiktage Festival, for a live conversation on Freies Radio Salzkammergut.
This year’s festival’s programme places Dmitri Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev at its center – two Russian composers whose lives and work were profoundly affected by Stalinist repression, censorship and political pressure. We explore how they responded to these circumstances, how their music can be understood in the context of resistance and artistic freedom, and why their stories remain relevant today.
The conversation also looks beyond the Soviet Union to composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff, who chose exile, as well as the festival’s broader musical journey through works by Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Britten, Dvorak, and Peteris Vasks.
From Neo-Classicism and Neo-Baroque to jazz, dance, memory and peace, Matthias Lingenfelder and Astrid Braunsperger share their ideas behind the programme, their approach to artistic direction and organisation, and what they hope audiences will discover in Mondsee.
