What was once a relatively abstract scientific debate has now been shaping international policy for over 30 years through the United Nations Climate Change Conferences, the COPs. The 31st edition of these conferences begins in a few days in Antalya. Since COP21 in Paris, the goal has been clearly stated: to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5 degrees. By this year—or next year at the latest—the international community will have failed to achieve this goal. From a scientific perspective, Rob Howarth has been following the debate for decades. Rob Howarth is the Atkinson Professor of Ecology and Environmental Biology at Cornell University and also co-editor of the scientific journal Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research. As part of the “Sonic Resilience” project, Radio CORAX spoke with him about disinformation, how the scientific community deals with it, the actors who spread it, and the role he attributes to the COPs and why he still has hope if enough people increase the pressure on international policymakers.
