Alsarah and the Nubatones join this episode on their artistic journeys, the Sudanese revolution, and a glimpse into Alsarah’s favorite songs from her 300+ cassette collection from her childhood in Sudan to Yemen to the U.S. The band is best known for their “East African retro pop” inspired by vintage sounds of Sudan and Egypt, but also their artistic activism. Earlier this year, the band released “Men Ana” (Who am I) in response to the 2018 – 2019 Sudanese revolution, Sudan’s largest grassroots uprising which led to the end of former Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir’s thirty-year rule.

The band was founded by Khartoum, Sudan-born singer, Alsarah, with Rami El Aasser (percussion), Mawuena Kodjovi (bassist/vocalist/trumpet), and Haig Manoukian (oud). Their debut 2014 “Silt” album was and followed by the 2016 “Manara” album with new members, Brandon Terzic on oud and Nahid on back-up vocals and keyboard.

Lead vocalist Alsarah, Mawuena Kodjovi, and Brandon Terzic join on air on October 23rd from the Salam Orient festival.
