Die Mai-Ausgabe von Eigenklang lädt ein zu einer Klang- und Gesprächscollage, die musikalische Vielfalt hörbar macht und gesellschaftspolitische Fragen nicht ausklammert. Im ersten Teil senden wir ausgewählte Ausschnitte aus dem Jahreskonzert des Instituts für Volksmusikforschung und Ethnomusikologie der mdw – Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. Die Veranstaltung versammelt Musik und Tanz aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten, die eng mit der kulturellen Vielfalt Wiens verwoben sind – dargeboten von Studierenden und Lehrenden des Instituts. Stimmen aus dem Publikum und von Mitwirkenden geben Einblicke in das musikalische Miteinander und die künstlerische Praxis an der mdw.
Im zweiten Teil der Sendung richten wir den Blick auf die Schnittstelle von Musik und strukturellem Rassismus. Im Zentrum steht ein Gespräch mit dem Ethnomusikologen Rodrigo Chocano. In seinem Projekt „Music that produces racial inequality? The Impact of Racist Ideas on the Conditions of Existence of Afro-diasporic Musicians in Peru“ (RACISMUS) untersucht Chocano, wie sich rassistische Stereotype auf das Leben und die Arbeitsbedingungen Afro-diasporischer Musiker*innen in Peru auswirken. Im Interview unterhalten wir uns allgemeiner über das Spannungsfeld Musik und Rassismus, über historische Kontinuitäten, stereotype Zuschreibungen, strukturelle Ungleichheiten – und darüber, wie Musik nicht nur Ausdruck von Identität, sondern auch Vehikel rassistischer Ideologien und ihrer Reproduktion sein kann.

The May edition of Eigenklang invites you to a collage of sound and dialogue that makes musical diversity audible and does not ignore socio-political issues. In the first part, we broadcast selected excerpts from the annual concert of the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. The event brings together music and dance from different contexts that are closely interwoven with Vienna’s cultural diversity – performed by students and teachers of the Department. Voices from the audience and from participants provide insights into musical co-operation and artistic practice at the mdw.
In the second part of the programme, we take a look at the interface between music and structural racism. A conversation with ethnomusicologist Rodrigo Chocano takes centre stage. In his project ‘Music that produces racial inequality? The Impact of Racist Ideas on the Conditions of Existence of Afro-diasporic Musicians in Peru’ (RACISMUS), Chocano examines how racist stereotypes affect the lives and working conditions of Afro-diasporic musicians in Peru. In the interview, we talk more generally about the tensions between music and racism, about historical continuities, stereotypical attributions, structural inequalities – and about how music can not only be an expression of identity, but also a vehicle for racist ideologies and their reproduction.
