Anupama Kundoo is an architect who opens up new perspectives: after completing her studies in Mumbai, she was able to fundamentally question and experiment with many things in Auroville, a real-life laboratory for architecture and urban planning.
She went through this process thoroughly and developed an attitude and culture of fresh thinking about all aspects that together make up architecture. Based on a precise study of local conditions, projects and spaces are created that have a special connection to their surroundings and relevance to the community. Each individual project expands a pool of knowledge. Anupama Kundoo accepts the laws of nature, but encourages us to question all the rules that we as a society have set for ourselves.
The Architekturzentrum Wien is currently dedicating the highly recommended exhibition “Abundance Not Capital” to the architect. This program was made possible as part of the accompanying program, and architect Francesco Qualizza also took part in the conversation as an interviewer.
Anupama Kundoo studied architecture at Sir J. J. College of Architecture, University of Mumbai, from 1984 to 1989. Immediately afterwards, she founded her own firm, Anupama Kundoo Architects, in Auroville. She submitted her dissertation entitled “BUILDING WITH FIRE Baked-Insitu Mud Houses of India: Evolution and Analysis of Ray Meeker’s Experiments” to the Technical University of Berlin in 2008. Anupama Kundoo passes on her knowledge through teaching and has been a professor of architecture and design methodology at the Technical University of Berlin since 2024.
