WOOHOO… WAITING FOR FALL — ARE YOU READY?
What happens when the fear of falling is no longer about the changing seasons, but about a world slipping backwards?
In my conversation with Mzamo Nondlwana, we spoke about growing up under apartheid, the rise of right-wing politics, and the fears we carry as migrants and queer people. But we also spoke about photographs of their mother, about people dancing, falling in love, celebrating, and finding joy even in the darkest times. About choosing the people who make us feel safe, seen, and supported.
Because even when the world feels like it is moving backwards, we must never forget how to love, how to stand together, and how to celebrate life. Joy, too, is resistance.
Mzamo Nondlwana is a queer, non-binary performing artist originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. Their artistic practice focuses on marginalised bodies and challenging colonial fantasies. Trained in dance in South Africa and Austria, they have collaborated with numerous artists and are one half of Bicha Boo Collective, an audiovisual performance collective active since 2017.
Their new work, WAITING FOR FALL, brings together dance, rhythm, humour, and collective resistance. Drawing on South African and Brazilian dance traditions, the performance responds to rising authoritarianism, racism, and attacks on queer and migrant communities — while insisting on the radical power of joy, hope, and togetherness.
